How will having a blog help my business?

As a business owner, you've probably been told repeatedly, that having a blog will be good for your business. This is good advice, as a blog can bring huge benefits, both by increasing your SEO and by providing useful information for your potential clients.

How can having a blog increase my SEO?

Search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and others, can drive traffic to your website. The recommended frequency for blog posts varies, however, regularly updating your website content, at least once a fortnight, will push your website higher up the rankings and get it seen by more potential customers.

Is it all about SEO keywords?

No, it’s definitely not just about the SEO keywords! Having those important keywords will direct potential clients to your website initially, however, it’s the quality of the content that will cause them to stay or go.

It won't matter how many keywords you include, if the content doesn’t engage, inform or entertain, then the reader won’t stay. The more engaged the reader is, the more likely they are to revisit, share and most importantly, purchase from you.

How will I know what to post in order to engage people's interest ?

The online space is full of people vying to get customers, so your content needs to stand out from the crowd. If you have a small to medium-sized business, revealing elements about you, the person behind the product or service, is important and will help people to relate to you.

Your blog posts should reflect your voice, vision and values, because it’s the personal touch and authentic feeling that will encourage the know, like and trust element with your potential clients. Your website copy will just give an overview of you and your business, your blog posts will help to expand on that and develop it further.

Why would people want to know my life story, before buying from me?

It’s not about telling them everything in great depth, it’s more about letting the motivation behind your business and your passion for what you do, shine through in your content.

People are much more likely to buy from people that they can relate to, especially if your ideal clients are parents, or if you are a coach or other service provider. If your story shows that you were once where they are now, that’s a great way to inspire trust and confidence.

Overall, your blog should be a combination of personal values, business information and sales and the balance here is really important.

What if I'm not good at writing content?

You can have a go, experiment with different posts and see what the feedback is like. Speaking authentically, from the heart is always a good way to start. However, you may be surprised at how many people outsource blog writing or social media posts, even small business owners with a limited budget.

Outsourcing blog post writing can often be more about time management than a lack of confidence in writing skills. Many people decide to employ a copywriter for the blogs, so they can focus their attention on what they like doing most in their business and what they are best at. For other people, it might be that English is their second or even third language, so having someone write their copy for them can save time and help to avoid grammatical errors. Copywriters will also often specialise in a particular field and know how to engage with your ideal client, as well as providing professionally written, SEO rich copy.

Is it still authentic, if a copywriter writes my blog posts for me?

Yes. A good copywriter will take the time to get to know you and your business. Through conversation with you, they will be able to reflect your tone, vision and values in your blog posts. You will be able to direct the subjects and topics and ask for any tweaks and revisions, to make sure you are ultimately happy with the content you publish.

Finally, as well as publishing your blog posts on your website, make sure that you direct people to them, via social media posts or via your email list, to add to the organic traffic from the search engines.
